Marshmallows for skirts? Not on my watch

It's rare kids, that I write negative things on here: I usually pretend that the bad fashion doesn't even exist...

But in a tired and blatantly hungover state this evening I stumbled upon this sweet-covered skirt, new in at Topshop, and it made me feel a little bit ill.

I just hate it.

It's ugly, unflattering and marshmallows taste like candied pillows - or claggy clouds.

Am I just being elderly and grumpy? Or is it as horrendous as I think it is?

Barker & Stonehouse furniture frenzy

On Saturday, my fella did a very dangerous thing: he took me to a furniture store of epic "shabby chic" proportions and then suggested that we blow some of our precious renovations budget on the funky shiz...

The shop in question is Barker & Stonehouse, a Northern brand that has just opened its first London store at the site of the old Price's Candles factory in Battersea.

If (like me) you're partial to a fashionable interior, what a sexy experience shopping there is.

I wanted everything. I found my dream love seat (more of that soon), bed, dining room dresser...everything. As well as the rustic furniture, there are lush accessories to browse, you can perch on the chairs you're about to buy in a lovely cafe and - of course - you can buy Farris (and Price's) candles.

I don't need anywhere near this much encouragement, to be honest, and it took about three minutes 20 seconds flat for me to set my heart on a fantabulous - massive - table made with reclaimed wood, painted contrasting colours and distressed.

And to go with? A matching bench, three red (industrial vintage-style) metal dining chairs (below) and two of the frankly delicious blue Bleecker chairs above.

And we may sound a bit spendthrifty here, but Barker & Stonehouse actually have a brilliant sale on the go right now to celebrte the opening of the store and the hole in our budget isn't too big (more of a gentle dent).

Magnificent maxi dress, 70s style

Saturday, I'm off to help family members celebrate a very special wedding anniversary - and a 70s-style maxi dress will be very appropriate...

Could this be the one?

Love the print and the splits, but the cheeky cut-out detail at the back is the bestest bit.

Perfect purple wedges

So, to go with my maxi dress for Saturday, I'm after some purple wedges.

Seen any?

I want something not too high, not too mad, not too bulky. Very purple.

I may have just fallen in love with this pair by Andrea Bernes @ Yoox, but would they arrive in time?

Purple shoes saga (and being a bad mum)

So these shoes are not nearly as delish as the purple wedges I was swooning over yesterday, but in strained circumstances (long story) they were the best I could do...

They've got a 70s vibe and, man, they are comfy (Hush Puppies...Hush Puppies!)

They will prolly go the same way as the table and chairs we had delivered today: after mucho excitement and feeling like a modern day Linda Barker, once they were in situ in the house, I just wasn't sure.

It's a sign of my mood at the moment - indecisive, negative and a bit stressed.

It's surely just summer holiday adjustment and it won't last. Every year is the same. I can't wait for El to break up and for us to spend quality time together, then the minute we get out of the house I start panicking about the work I've got to do when I get back.

I'm sure El has still got indigestion from the fajitas I made him bolt down when our leisurely lunch turned into a panic-fest. And it's not good that he was apologising to me for us missing the bus when I was the one who insisted on going to Sainsbury's on a wild goose chase for a photo frame (again, long story).

I'm a s**t mum sometimes. On most days during the summer hols, in fact.

Anyway, on a brighter note, the shoes are to go with this dress - worn once before (perhaps twice) and definitely in need of another airing. And I made good on my threat to paint my nails in five pastel shades.

Yorkshire, here I come.

There's the full outfit then, as worn Saturday night to celebrate my aunt and uncle's 40th wedding anniversay.

It was a cracking bash at their gorgeous house and I fell even more deeply in love with this dress than ever.

I think the purple shoes did the trick - and if you look close enough, you might spot the very special pastel nails...

There's a different colour on each nail...

The pic was taken (by El) outside the very lovely Brickfields Farm, where we stayed the night

Ready to party in a typically understated outfit

By the end of the night there was barefoot dancing in the rain and air guitar on the lawn

Motel vintage dress

Today I had lots of compliments in the office regarding a dress I've had for some time and wore ages ago for a shoot on the coast.

It's from Motel Vintage, and back then, I think you could only buy such treasure in that beautiful basement at Topshop's Oxford Circus store.

Now, however, Motel Vintage has its own online home via the mainline website - so check it out.

A dreamy dress

Perhaps foolishly, given my workload, my financial situation (tax bill day) and general sense of chaos and confusion at the moment, I have booked to take the young man to the Isle of Wight to visit some friends tomorrow.

And what do I do when faced with a situation that is becoming needlessly stressful?

I dream of having two grand spare to spend on an Oscar de la Renta summer silk wrap-effect print dress to travel there in.

Neon Beats Pill by Dr Dre review

I love a fashionable gadget as much as the next person, and in my line of work I often come across something that looks swish, and promises to do everything bar make the breakfast.

Quite often the reality is a bit different. I'm blinded by science and if something is too tough to use or doesn't look as good as it did on the tin, I lose interest.

But this little baby, the limited edition neon orange Beats Pill by Dr. Dre, is an absolute blinder...

The keen-eyed amongst you might spot a wee write-up in a broadsheet near you next (ahem) weekend, but here it is in all its glory on my blog, in my garden.

The speed version is that it's a wireless, funky-ass speaker that you can easily play and control (from up to 30ft away) through your iPhone / MP3 / laptop  etc...anything Bluetooth enabled, basically.

For ages I've had a little speaker box thang that plugs into the iPod or iPhone and I loved it - particularly on holidays. But if you forget to turn it off (music playing or not), the batteries drain, which isn't condusive to saving the planet or my cash flow.

This baby has a rechargeable built-in battery - with seven hours battery life (making it the bestest music gadget for picnics, garden parties, holidays...) - so that worry is now gone.

It's dead easy to use too: I simply hooked-up via Bluetooth, synching it to my phone in seconds, and then the glorious sounds of John, George, Ringo and Paul (and some other stuff I listen to - it isn't all Beatles) came booming forth.

El thinks it's amazing, natch, particularly when I treat him to a bit of modern music. Like Rudimental and Disclosure and, erm, Olly Murs? (My heart never skips a beat, if I'm honest.)

Fabulous.

This gorgeous, slinky gadget is perfect for summer fun

Also, you can answer the phone through it. Nice. And it is small and the pill-based design is sleek and the (new, limited edition) five neon colour range (blue, orange, green, yellow and hot pink) is eye-popping....the marketing material says "just what the Dr. ordered", and I would definitely agree.

You would have laughed, though, if you'd been a fly on the wall when we drove up to Yorkshire at the weekend. We had the Raconteurs blaring out and I happened to plot a map on the iPhone because I didn't have a clue where we were going and every now and again the music would gently fade and a nice man would tell us where to go.

Yes, my friends. Years after everyone else, we discovered the beauty of Sat Nav. By accident.

We are so cool.

With thanks to Beats by Dre.

An Isle of delight: Cowes on Wight

We had the bestest of times on our short-but-sweet break on the Isle of Wight. Ryde was the scene of my first proper date with the old man, so that's a bit of nostalgia right there, and on this trip I discovered Cowes, which was in the throes of preparing for Cowes Week 2013: I'd certainly go back to soak up the buzz again.

Here's just a little run-down...

We met up with our partners in crime and were lucky enough to be staying with them at a gorgeous house minutes from West Cowes ferry port, owned by their friends

We bezzed around the island on the Downs Breezer, an open top bus that left from the main drag in Ryde - never have low branches created so much fun

The weather was perfect for a breezy and beautiful tour of the countryside

We stopped off for lunch at a picture perfect pub with a thatched roof (and a special offer on cider): the Hare and Hounds is on the top of Arreton Downs, overlooking Robin Hill Country Park

There are not many days in the UK each year when you can jump into the sea without causing yourself physical discomfort - but with the temperature pushing 30, the lads made the most of the Solent

The beach at Ryde is sandy and shallow - perfect for the young men

Lily (aka the Girl with the Bergundy Converse) braves it in her gorgeous dress

On such a warm day, sunset was the perfect time for a dip

Before heading home on Friday we enjoyed the view of the (busy, pre-Cowes Week) marina from the Waterside pub - dark and stormy, £2.50 (highly recommended, although the pub isn't all that)

And the highlight of the trip: a Beatles brunch at the Octopus' Garden cafe on Cowes' High Street

When we get our "cool room" kitted out, I want a display cabinet just like this - FACT

El gets stuck into his Strawberry Fields smoothie (they need more Beatles-themed items on the menu, but the food is fab)

Nothing like a stroll down Abbey Road...

Emma Willis black lace dress

Time for this week's Emma Willis watch and she looked lovely as ever on Big Brother's Friday eviction show wearing a black lace dress and signature peep toe shoes from Whistles.

As the evenings are usually slightly cooler during August, this month is perfect for busting out your LBD - but I'd be pairing mine with neon heels for a late summer / on-trend twist.

Bon.

Vintage fabric shirt dress

Big day out on Saturday and due to a temporary (I hope!) cash flow issue, I planned to wear a vintage dress I've had since last summer.

And, of course, because I can't afford to buy a new dress, I've just been looking at...you guessed it, new dresses.

Well, sort of new.

I love the Urban Renewals collection at Urban Outfitters and the silk-feel shirt dress above is a blistering example of the styles they come up with using vintage, deadstock and surplus materials that are no longer produced.

Now I just have to talk myself out of buying it.

Beulah London "moody" floral dress

I'm going through a very strong (true) vintage phase at the moment (it comes over me in waves), but my eyes nearly popped out of my head yesterday when I was sent a pic of this amazing dress by Beulah London.

I'm a fan of this label anyway, but this vintage-seeped "moody floral" dress is just beyond gorgeous. Inspired by dark floral catwalk prints for AW13 by Lanvin, Oscar de la Renta and Erdem, this delicious full length dress with full sleeves looks divine with 70s styling (metallic nails and floppy hat = a must!)

It's pieces like this that make the prospect of the end of the summer a lot more bearable.

Emma Willis blue shorts eviction outfit

I suspect this one might divide opinion, but Emma Willis was looking pretty swish, I thought, for tonight's Big Brother eviction show wearing navy blue shorts with a blue cropped jacket and matching heels.

Hot off the press, I can tell you that the tailored blue shorts are from Zara and she teamed them with a white Kooples shirt, blue print H&M blazer and Whistles heels.

Love or loathe?
