Five year fashion flashback

$

I love a nostalgic photo, so when I was asked to take part in the Five Year Fashion Flashback project from vouchercodes.co.uk I jumped at the chance.

This is in honour of Voucher Codes' 5th birthday and I'm one of five bloggers chosen to embarrass myself take part by sharing photos of me five years ago and telling you lucky lot what I was wearing and why - and if you do the same on your blog, you could win a trip for two to Paris...

Back in summer 2008, I hadn't even started this blog yet, and I hadn't quite found my fashion mojo after becoming a mum, but I was getting there. During that summer, El and I had popped over to France to visit my mum and it was probably the first time in my life that I pre-styled every outfit before we set foot on the ferry and even wrote down a list that I referred to during the holiday. You can see the way things were going with my fashion attitude.

During the break en France, my funky mother suggested we go to the Vieilles Charrues festival, which is pretty much in her back garden.

El was the only child in amongst about 200,000 French festies, but he was looked after very well (a kind teen hoisted him up on his shoulders for Kasabian, for example) and it set a good precedent in terms of my mission to be the ultimate rock & roll mum.

Wardrobe-wise, wellies were a must, I went khaki with a matching Ed Hardy tee (from TK Maxx), a sneaky denim waistcoat and red jeans that I still treasure (and can just about squeeze in to) from Topshop.

You'll notice that I didn't have my trademark red hair back then (shocking!) and it was pre-wearing-a-brace, so the front teeth are very much (ahem) out there. I won't lie, setting up this blog in 2010 definitely made me reconsider certain aspects of my appearance and I started making much more of an effort.

The youngest swinger in town

On day two I was wearing slightly questionable denim shorts (again Topshop) with the wellies and a Ramones sleeveless tee. The shorts have been cast aside but the Kate Moss @ Topshop khaki jacket and t-shirt are still very much in circulation (I've worn them both during the course of this week).

I'm not going to say I look back on these photos and think I was looking my best (nooooo way) but I was working things out, for sure. I'm not cringing as I type - and besides, my cute, tiny sidekick takes the edge off a bit.

Things have definitely changed since then. In 2008, I was an absolute Topshop devotee - now I'm more interested in the Peekaboo vintage concession whenever I venture to the fashion Mecca that is Oxford Circus.

My style inspiration back then was Kate Moss (hence the jacket) - because, of course, it was before the heady days of New Girl and Made in Chelsea, where most of my celeb fashion fixes come from these days.

I don't think my shopping budget has changed all that much. I bought more clothes back then - and had to ditch a lot of them too. Quantity does not equate quality. Now I'm much more likely to spend on a key piece or two from the high street each month, and at least one vintage treasure, rather than bulging bags of fast fashion from Primark (yuk).

Those red jeans were probably my favourite item of clothing back then. Now I'd be hard pressed to name a fave - I just love my vintage wardrobe. I'm lucky enough to have collected quite a few fabulous dresses: the one I'm wearing today (very pink, very sparkly) is right up there (I'll show you later).

And as for the best trend I was wearing five years ago - it has to be the enduring skinny jeans. I've never really had the thighs for them, but man, are they versatile.

So, enough about me - over to you guys.

If you want the chance to win two tickets on the Eurostar to Paris*, you simply need to do the same as me. Do yourself a blog post, name checking the Five Year Fashion Flashback and Voucher Codes' 5th birthday, and make sure you answer the following questions, casting your mind back five years...

What was your:
1. Favourite place to shop
2. Style inspiration
3. Typical shopping budget
4. Favourite item of clothing
5. Favourite trend that you were wearing.

Easy peasy.

Good luck - and may the fashion time lords be kind!

* Winner will be picked through random.org and full terms and conditions will be published on vouchercodes.co.uk/competitions

The winter playsuit

Although I'm still firmly locked into summer wardrobe mode, I don't mind looking ahead to autumn when it involves something truly swish...

Maybe autumn/winter playsuits will be a big trend this year? If this hot little number by Motel (£45) is anything to go by, I wouldn't be surprised.

Love the long sleeves and the graphic rose print - very moody.

And wouldn't it look grand, when the temperature inevitably drops, with black tights and military style boots?

Just a little something in honour of tonight's spectacular meteor shower...I could certainly wear this hi-lo galaxy print jersey dress until the stars come home.

We have discovered a fabulous new Tuesday night twist for any Londoners out there: it's at Gordon Ramsay's Bread Street Kitchen, One New Change.

Every Tuesday they are picking one independent booze producer and concocting three bespoke cocktails with three perfectly-matched canapés - and you can try the lot for £20.

Amazing.

Appaz, this is one of Ted Baker's best-selling items of the week...are you surprised? Gorgeous innit.

I think I'm becoming slightly obsessed with this moody floral trend, but with some fierce military-style boots and a leather jacket, this dress would just kill the rock chic look.

If you're into it, Ted's "oil painting" dress for AW13 is out now and will set you back £139.

Westfield Stratford family fun - and a new Wahaca kids menu

It's now around that time of the holidays, when I normally start getting stuck for ideas of how to keep El entertained. This year, given I have only spent four full days with my laddo since he broke up in July (*sob*), it's not been as much of an issue - instead I have simply relished every second we've spent together.

But if I was seeking inspiration, last night would have been a corker.

We were invited to spend an evening over at Westfield Stratford to sample a taste of the family-friendly nightlife on offer...

I love a big mall; Mulberry et al aside, it just makes me think of cool American movies and wishing I was 16 again so I could hang out there (beats the street corners I was consigned to in the 80s).

When El gets older I'm sure he'll be desperate to go there with mates; but for now he was more than satisifed with a night out avec the 'rents - particularly as it kicked off with a trip to the Lego store to buy a brand new Back to the Future Lego set.

There's tons of activities (many of them free) going on at Westfield for the remainder of the summer hols, and El was keen on the table tennis and giant Jenga. He was also impressed by the funky helter skelter out on The Street, where we headed for dinner at Wahaca.

Cocktail in hand as ever: that's a Wahaca mule right there

After a long day at work, this was much-needed

It was our maiden voyage to the tapas-style Mexican street food venue and we were all impressed.

Matt and I ate delicious cervice tostadas (shrimp and scallops tossed with hot habanero chilli, lime, cucumber and mint), chicken tinga tacos (chicken in a smoky tomato sauce topped with crema and extra-hot chipotle adobo) and chorizo and potato quesadillas (British chorizo, fresh thyme and steamed potato) washed down with Pacifico beer and a Wahaca mule (tequila, ginger beer, lime...hmmmmm).

The MSC ceviche

The fresh, full-flavoured and crisp salads were our highlight though, especially the Sonora (avocado, pumpkin seeds, beans, British organic spelt and cos lettuce).

Wahaca salads get the thumbs up from us

El, meanwhile, was on a mission to try the brand new Wahaca kids menu, which has been designed with less of a kick so that children can enjoy a non-spicy experience in the Mexican market.

He ate a grilled chicken burrito (filled with rice, sour cream, cheese and shredded cabbage) and woofed the lot - which, to say he is a fussy eater, is some endorsement.

He also enjoyed a side of sweet potato, a fizz-less (at his specification and happily catered for by the friendly staff) orange fizz and a dessert of salted caramel ice cream.

Good news: the main, side and drink for kids is only £5.

El gets stuck in

That, ladies and gents, is a burrito smile (try to ignore the teen hair - it's a phase he's going through aka we're all too lazy to go to the hairdressers)

And after all that delicious food, there was only one thing for it: extra cool points awarded to mum and dad for taking him off to see (the most enjoyable) The Wolverine (including Hugh Jackman's bare bum!) at the Vue cinema, seconds away from Wahaca (thankfully, as we could immediately recline in the big, comfy seats and let the Mexican street food work its' magic).

A really fab family night was had by all, I got to window shop on the way home and Eliott says: "It was very good...and fun."

High praise indeed.

With thanks to Westfield Stratford City

Second fabulous day in Liverpool (featuring indoor crazy golf, Rankin, a bubbling chicken tagine and a Honey Cant Buy me Love for the road) and we're just cramming in a couple of last Liver-tastic hours before taking an evening train back down South *sigh*

Stay tuned to see the immense (imho) vintage dress I debuted at the Cavern last night (and ended up twistin'& shoutin' in at the Rubber Soul nite spot).

Vintage 1960s paisley print dress in Liverpool

I promised to show you the vintage dress I was strutting around Liverpool in this weekend, and here it be...

This one might still divide opinion (as it did when I was considering whether or not to buy it) but I absolutely love it.

It matches my hair (and the decor in the Hard Day's Night Hotel)

The thing I love about a classic vintage day dress like this is how easy it is to wear on a night out - and you need absolutely no styling, no accessories.

I wore very simple wedges (bought within minutes of arriving in Liverpool for £16.99) and my green apple necklace. That was it.

The print is so bold and so eye-catching that any further accessorising would just create a diversion from the main event.

The perfect dress to wear for a night out on Mathew Street (as usual I was the only person in vintage rather than bodycon - just the way I like it) and I cannot wait to wear it again.

The paisley print is soooo psychedelic - *love*

The ultimate destination for a one woman 60s fashion revival

The dress was just £9.95 (plus p&p) from Aurore Vintage via eBay - tres bon!

New Liverpool family fun

You know, people often ask me why I love Liverpool so much and why I seem to be constantly up there.

There are many reasons - not all Beatle-related, I'll have you know - and one of those reasons is that there's always something new to do for families in the (easily walkable - unlike London's sprawl) city centre...

Our first find on this visit was Hopskotch on Stanley Street (just off Mathew Street), a "street kitchen and bar" with absolutely delicious burgers (not to mention tender, pulled pork and slaw in to-die-for brioche buns) and a cool, New York vibe

El (filling his face as per) highly recommends this hip yet family-friendly (we went during the day, it might be more adult-orientated in the eve) joint

We also checked out Jungle Rumble Adventure Golf in Liverpool ONE for the first time - we did the volcano course: loads of fun (and there is a licensed bar, folks)

The golf cost us £20 for two adults and a child (one 18 hole round), so not the cheapest day out but it did keep us all amused (and out of the rain) and if we'd had the usual posse of mates with us, we could have saved money

I was determined to go to the Walker Art Gallery this time to see Rankin's ALIVE: In the face of death exhibition (which is amazing) - and El loved the Big Art section for kids (note Doctor Who portrait, freshly drawn)

And any opportunity to dress up (a la Henry VIII) is most welcome

I take this picture every time we visit to see how much El is growing (answer - lots, and at a rate of knots) He is wearing a Superman hoodie from TU @ Sainsburys, soft denim shorts from H&M and K Swiss trainers from TK Maxx - Lennon mop top, model's own

No visit is complete without venturing downstairs to the Cavern Club (don't forget that families are welcome until 8pm) - and on this occasion, El treats John to a taste of the sonic screwdriver he managed to twist our arms into buying for him from the (v cool) Worlds Apart comic store on Lime Street

Good old Emma Willis.

She went high street all the way on this series of Big Brother - and for last night's final, when Sam was crowned as the winner, she looked resplendent in a £79, A-line printed blue dress by & Other Stories - get it while it's hot.

Should Matt Smith and Harry Styles battle the bulge?

My son is a HUGE Doctor Who fan, but that's not why I'm posting a piccy of the outgoing time lord, Matt Smith.

He's committing a little fashion crime, that's why.

No, it's not the hat.

It's his bulge....

Men with bulky mobile phones stuffed in their jeans can ruin a perfectly stylish silhouette, y'see (and you thought I was being rude).

Matt's not the only celeb committing the offence (do steady on before scrolling down, ladies).

Who knew we'd be complaining about Harry's bulge?

It's true: even the otherwise perfect Harry "One Direction" Styles has been caught with his bulging pocket on parade.

But there is a solution, and the lovely George Lamb is the celeb on a mission to promote it.

George has joined forces with O2 and Huawei to spearhead a fashion crusade to get Visible Mobile Lines (or VML) off the streets of Britain.

According to George: "Too long have we stood back and watched innocent people destroy their clothes because they didn’t have another option. This is all about teaching the public that there is another way, they do have choices, and they can save their style. Gone are the days of unsightly bulges straining against women and men’s thighs, O2 and Huawei are their saviour, and I am here to spread the message."

And here's George in person to tell you a bit more about why the Huawei Ascend P6 smartphone could be the answer to your VML troubles...

Brendan Benson European tour

Tomorrow, I'll do a big, fat fashion post.

But for now I just wanted to take a moment to worship at the altar of Brendan Benson, who played live in London last night and was absolutely fabulous...

Curly hair and beard aside, the Raconteurs co-frontman (he is so McCartney to Jack White's Lennon) has released some amazing solo material over the last few years: if you like your singer-songwriters from Nashville with a country twist and a dollop of Beatle influence, you will love him.

I wore cowboy boots and a clingy skirt and sang along at the top of my lungs to classics like Metarie and Cold Hands, Warm Heart.

And he played two Raconteurs numbers (Hands and Steady As She Goes).

Bliss.

If you're not convinced yet, this should do the trick...

Please sponsor Fashion Detectives for Marie Curie

Tomorrow evening, a small team of us are taking part in Marie Curie's Walk Ten event in memory of friends and family who have benefitted from Marie Curie care.

I actually heard about the event through work: I wrote an advertorial feature for the charity/the Guardian and thought it sounded like a fantastic thing to do (and now you can't say I don't practise what I preach!)

Who wouldn't want to amble through a vineyard at twilight and then wind down with a picnic and firework display afterwards??

On a more personal note, my uncle - and my stepdad's brother - both passed away earlier this year and I wanted to do something to recognise the fact that both were cared for in the same Marie Curie hospice towards the end.

If you would like to sponsor us - and wine/fireworks aside, 10k will certainly be a challenge for El -you can simply click this link to our JustGiving page and do your bit.

Every £20 we raise pays for another hour of Marie Curie care, so even a small donation really helps.

Thank you.

Nine West shirt dress at TK Maxx

I made my first autumnal purchase today: this Nine West shirt dress with a striking print, £29.99 at TK Maxx.

It's so vintage-esque.

My freelance contract at the newspaper has been extended until the end of November, so I figure I might need a few office-friendly dresses for the forthcoming season. But I'm tempted to pack this little beauty in my holiday suitcase tomorrow and wear it one evening with wedges...

Multi-purpose fashion, innit.

Blowfish boots as summer cools down

I saw a girl in King's Cross station today wearing a gorgeous summer floral dress with tough, little ankle boots.

It's a look I love and it's definitely the way to make a seamless summer-to-autumn transition.

I've got my beady eye on these Blowfish babies from Office - not only stylish (in a rock chic way) but also bound to be comfy.

If I have any cash left after my French experience this week, I may have to indulge.

And speaking of the French connection, I'll be off tomorrow, so see you on the other side of the Channel when I plan to regale you with a few last ditch summer looks, and other stories.

Bon soir.

Off I go for a little break across the sea...would this be too much for rural Brittany? We may never know.

Anyway, I'm determined to find a vintage shop out there on this visit. Determined.

Let's hope the ferry stays afloat and see you on the other side...
